Dhadak 2 gets U/A 16+ certificate after CBFC mandates extensive cuts, changes caste references, and modifies sensitive scenes for release.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has allowed Dhadak 2, the remake of the Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal to release after the film went through 16 cuts. There was heavy modification to the film primarily to remove caste-based references and slurs. Dhadak 2,arious and fathers. The CBFC member’s cuts lists shows cuts to various dialogues to dilute their potency were made. For example, the dialogue “A backlog of 3,000 years cannot be cleared in 70 years”, was made to read “A backlog of age-old discrimination cannot be cleared in 70 years”. Other caste slurs like “chamar” and “bhangi” have been muted and replaced with “junglee”. The poem “Thakur Ka Kuan” was also censored and a doha by Saint Tulsidas was replaced in a song.
The film’s visual content was changed, including three scenes that were either cut or altered. The CBFC cut a five second shot of a character urinating on the lead character, only abbreviated another scene of the lead’s father being embarrassed from longer than half a minute to around twenty seconds, and cut a separate scene where the blue colour of the dog was cut from another scene. The CBFC also required a longer disclaimer. The disclaimer is now 1 minute and 51 seconds long, and must be read out loud.
Dhadak 2 is given a U/A 16+ rating and has a duration of 2 hours 26 minutes. Dhadak 2 is produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Zee Studios, and is directed by Shazia Iqbal. The large extent of cuts notwithstanding, the film may have significant weight anyway with its potent themes and performances. Interestingly, another film, Phule also had similar dialogue cuts to Dhadak 2 cuts, perhaps suggesting the CBFC is being more preventive when it comes to different sources of content they interpret as being related to caste atrocities.
